Notes from today

·         Pat
o   move 3 pixels on screen  1 before tech
o    move 2 pixels on screen 5
o   Be sure to credit the Holocaust museum for the music we are using for transitions (rolling photos)

·         Everyone else
o   Brian (entering NewYork)  film grain brought down
o   Brian use the photos referenced in the blog (Romanian) not the Ashwhiz images
o   Michael (distillery) render out background as alpha
o   Mingran soften eagle animation with blur
o   Juan you need to stretch you hospital bed scene

don't forget to attend rehearsal there are only a few left before they turn into tech runs.
for example: today at rehearsal I learned that the scene where they are leaving to go from the first camp to the second camp is a lot longer than I was expecting. So it might be a good idea to put a great deal of effort into the pano displayed at that time, since it looks like that image will be on the screen for quite some time. (the streets)

Camp images

Hi everyone

I am at the rehearsal and Kevin and I were talking about the videos he saw today. He wanted to make sure that we are using historically accurate photos. The videos with images looked great, but the historical images of the holocaust were mostly from Polish and German camps, our story is about the camps in Romania And Russia. The camps we showed showed starvation, which was more of a problem at the other camps. He posted links to the accurate images on our blog.

Let me know if you have any questions.
EVERYONE, KEVIN informs me the shows are WED-SAT next week and we have the tech rehearsals this sunday. I need ALL The coordinators to be present for the TECH rehearsals and ANY and ALL designers who can be here for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE on Sunday to make any tweaks and adjustments that we may need. ALOT of his show is backdrops with just a few gags that have to be worked out so please make room in your schedules to attend a rehearsal and then attend tech SUNDAY NIGHT MONDAY NIGHT and Tuesday NIGHT. FOR AS LONG as possible. I will be here beginning on Saturday for lighting tech and then through the week in the evenings

This is my running list of who all has gone to rehearsal

Pano Room of Beds Ellis Island

Mosque of Omar Jerusalem

I hope you all have a chance to make it to one of the rehearsals in the next week. Like we mentioned in class it would be beneficial to tell Kevin what part of the show it is you are working on, that way you can see what they have worked on for that point so far, as well as you wont have to stay the full three hours. I will be attending the Tuesday rehearsal for next week and hopefully will have it lined up with Kevin for them to do a rough full run through for me to film. That way in class on Thursday we can view my tape and talk about what has been done for what scenes and what still needs to be done. The whole crew is very easy going and very willing to answer questions AS WELL AS get pointers from you, so don't be afraid to ask them!

This is not the final script, but it's what the cast has been working with the past few rehearsals.

use it as a tool to better understand how quickly the scenes come and go.
keep in mind these are 2 life stories massively condensed, and include a lot of information.

Sample Tomb Sound

Here's a sample background sound for the Tomb.  Not sure exactly how they're doing the scene yet, but  go ahead and give me some feedback.

Work In Progress

im hoping to add in a still from the bow of the boat/add camera animation to make it look like they are approching Ellis Island

Forgot to actually post this last week. An ominous interior. I had a wooden background, but I like the idea of the actors being surrounded by black screens.

At this point we've pushed up the website with a few updates: http://digitalworlds.ufl.edu/handfulofleaves/

Our main areas left are cast & crew, which we will need a full list from the Director. We can go as far to include headshots and/or take new head shots, though I know actors often prefer to provide their existing headshots.

Trello for 2D

Please, if you are doing any work for the 2D portion of the class, I ask that you make a Trello account. Trello is a web based white board application that helps with project management. If I haven't already hunted you down in class and asked for your user name in Trello can you please post it here as a comment so I know to add you.

Thank you,

eagle flying

This is a conceptual design about the scene of eagle flying, which completely on the basis of the description of our script. I try to add more layers on this present version.

“The scene happens at noon, and all were cast outside. Everything sleeps in a deep lethargy. But behold a small black dot appears on the horizon, at the head of the rocky cliff. It moves and grows. It  is an eagle, proudly spreading its wings, soaring with confidence and energy above everything. Its eyes are inclined upwards, towards the sun.”

“Evening approaches. The lake too;slowly it moves its red waves. Suddenly foam appears on the water and a pure white swan comes into view.”

Opening Scene

Here is the pano image of Lib West.

I have also done a test video to see what kind of resolution Adobe Premier would let me export with the 6:1 ratio that the REVE has. The resolution of the mp4 is 2120x344 and it is just under two minutes, but still it is 91 megs, so I will have bring that to class. The avi is 3 gig, which I assume is too big.

3D and 2D

From our meeting with Kevin it has become apparent that 3D creation will not be as important as 2D elements for this production. Duncan and Paul please meet to discuss the dispersal of elements that will be needed and who will be doing what. From our discussion we will definitely be needing now

Eagle Flying
invoking mermaid
After Effects effect for the Ship
Trains (exterior)
Trains (cattle Car interior)
Maps and Newsreel footage
Large Pano Of Jerusalem
Several different concentration Camps
Pano of Library West
Brewery and Distillery
Italy Scene
Large Door with lock interior
Mosque or Omar
Death Train Scene
Police Station

So please discuss this as now that 3D is NOT an essential component as we had previously discussed that this huge amount of work be assigned and dispersed across the teams

Here is an image of the "meat hooks" which Mr. Marshall mentioned today:

"A group of American Congressmen flew to Germany and visited the Buchenwald camp on April 24, 1945.  They were shown the club that was used to beat prisoners to death if they didn’t die fast enough on the meat hooks.  Note the dummy on the wall on the right hand side.  This was part of the display set up for visitors."

Tuning Forks

I didn't realize that there are different types of tuning forks. I have only seen the longer thin ones like on the left. When I was looking for images I saw that there are also the kind with the bulkier bodies, like the one on the right. I think that these thicker ones are probably more accurate to the era; the other looks like a modern design and is also the kind that I've seen used.

Mermaid Beckons!

Here is a 30 second clip of mermaids beckoning Leah to follow them.

Music from the Holocaust

I have been searching for some transition music. I found this website:

And selected a few songs to use during the Merdinger part of the performance. Not sure if this is the kind of music to use or not during transitions or not. Thoughts?

A Child of Our Time

From Land to Land

At the End of the Forest
I have a Doctors Appointment Today so I will not be able to make it to class.

Here is what I have of the nazi camp. I plan on adding more layers, but if you'd like to see what it would look like on the projectors, the Image is here:

Thank you, and sorry I will not be present.

A video clip about immigration

This video tells several large immigrant activities on the history of United States, which mainly describe a tale of a family immigrated to Ellis Island that includes lots of scenes, which are related to the descriptions of our script such as the scene of plenty of homeless people boarding to America, the scene of Statue of liberty etc.

03:57-05:30 shows up some scenes about one family who immigrated to Ellis Island
09:58-10:12 shows up the scene Statue of Liberty

Panoramic Painting Test

A simple sketch of the Nazi Camp layout,

I wanted to see what it looks like on the big projection screen. I'll have a more finished version by next week.

Rehearsal 2.20.13

I made contact with the stage manager, here is her email

Kiana Johnson

She said she would more than happy to take any artistic questions we may have.

On the note of headshots, Kevin said the cast won't have costumes until much closer to the show dates, so headshots should really be face only. It might be easier to wait until we can just have a full media day.

They were working on the scene where Mr. Merdinger discovers how to make yeast, which ends up saving his life.

Another important note, I'm not sure if it was already discussed, but the life of Mr. Merdinger portrayed in the play will only extend until he arrives in America. The rest will be left for the audience to read on the website if they so chose.

A Story Like No Other - Dr. Merdinger

Dr. Merdinger story was a unique one for sure. He was one of the lucky ones who had lived through that time period. If it wasn't for his ability/usefulness to the germans and russians he might not have been able to continue his life past the war. Throughout the reading I began to wonder what was going on through his head at this time. Paranoia? Constantly knowing that the people you're working for are killing your race off would make many loose their minds. The thought of when will they turn on me would have ran throughout my head day in and day out. I'm sure the thought of poising the alcohol crossed through his mind but if he had done that it might have been the end of the road for him once the germans found out. He played it safe for the most part and did what he had to do to stay alive.

Soldiers Round Up

Working on a scene for when German soldiers are rounding up civilians. I still need the German voice in the loud speaker issuing order.

Round Up

Dr Merdinger

Dr. Merdinger story was very interesting and compelling to read. His tale of survival is unlike any other World War II story I have ever heard of. Needless to say he had it very hard and nothing came easy to him his entire life. And when he finally got things going his way he decided to come to America and start over again. I was very surprised to learn about how the Germans and Russians used him to make alcohol to use in the diesel fuel and of course for recreational use. Because of his specialties he was valuable to the war effort in various ways and was not treated as a normal prisoner. This prevented him from being gassed, shot, experimented on or tortured like so many unfortunate others. I was hoping that he would poison some of the alcohol when he gave it to the occupying forces, like some Jewish scientist sabotaged V2 rockets.

Blue Style

I totally agree with Kevin’s statement about adding blue elements for images after trying to redefine pictures’ style. The images below bring us the feelings of more magic, fantasy, dream, illusion, memory and old. It is real.
